Big Tattoo Wines

While shopping for wine at my favorite local wine shop, I came across a label that caught my eye. It was a large Fleur de Lis with the words “Two Brothers” above. This holds a special meaning for me as I have two nephews who got matching Fleur de Lis tattoos on a trip to New Orleans for their Grandmother’s memorial service. The Fleur de Lis was my Mother’s favorite symbol, a reminder of happy times and good friends when we lived in New Orleans. I decided I had to have a bottle of this wine for the front label alone. When I got the bottle home, I read the back label and was almost brought to tears. Here’s what this wine is all about…
“This wine comes from two brothers, Alex, a wine importer, and Erik, a tattoo artist, who wanted to pay homage to their late mother, Liliana, who passed away from cancer. With their combined talents and effort, they created Big Tattoo Wines. For every bottle sold, 50 cents is donated in the name of Liliana S. Bartholomaus, to a non-profit organization that focuses on breast cancer research or hospice care. Thanks to the support of people like you, the project has already raised over $300,000 in donation funds.”
Big Tattoo Red
This packs a powerhouse of fruit. Aromas of ripe berry and plum set the stage for an explosion of fruit in the mouth with flavors of blackberry, black cherry and cocoa, that all come together on the smooth, rich and lingering finish.
Big Tattoo White
This blend is full of floral and peach aromas followed by flavors of citrus, apples and melon finishing with lingering hints of honeydew and stone.
Local Efforts
“Half of our donations from the sale of each bottle are distributed locally to benefit charities that share our mission. Erik and Alex thank you for your support.”

My two nephews, Lucas and Richard have since gotten their little brother, Michael to get a matching tattoo and their little sister, Alex, is working on her mother to get permission for one of her own.
Bottom Line
Whatever the motivation, label, price, color, shelf talker… try something new. You may be pleasantly surprised. I was. The Big Tattoo White and Red are new favorites of mine and knowing that a portion of the price goes to such a good cause makes the enjoyment of drinking them even greater.

On Monday the 13th, I held the first Women's Wine Workshop of the year at Oakleys bistro. Christine Wente (pictured below with Aja Doyle of Olinger Distributors) from Wente Vineyards was our guest of honor. She was just a delight to have, and we hope that she comes back often. During the class we discussed the Vineyard Selection wines from Wente in the Livermore Valley.

The next Women's Wine Workshop will be announced in the next article, or you can contact me by clicking here. Thanks to all of the great ladies who attended the class. I had a great time!
